Boys to Men

The first time I felt you move inside me,

A love I grew in my heart so easy to see.;

A love that I had never felt before

A love for a being I would soon adore

The first time I held you,

My eyes welled up  with tears;

I could feel my life change forever.

You washed away all my  fears.

I lived my life without love,

I didn’t believe it was real

But the first time I saw you,

I could suddenly feel.

Your first words, your first steps,

Your beautiful little smiles;

Caused my heart to grow

From inches to miles.

For so many years as a single mom,

I couldn't wait for you to grow up;

I believed my life would get easier

I would finally feel some calm.

But the years went by so quickly;

as birthdays came and went

I didn’t realize at the time

Just how quickly the time was being spent

I wish I had noticed at the time

How quickly my time with you was passing by

I would sell my soul to go back again

When I held you close when you would cry

I would sell my soul to go back to that time,

When I would kiss your head

Every night before sleep;

My own paradigm.

I miss holding your hand when you crossed the street,

Looking up at me with a trust so complete.

You needed me so much back then

I always feared I would fail you again and again

Those days are now memories,

I can’t go back to that time;

When you were my little boys,

With a love so sublime

I can’t help but feel sadness,

As the years pass me by;

And I miss those baby boys

Who taught my heart how to fly.

The fact remains; my boys are now grown

And I must let them fly,

A fact of life I’ve always known

Though my heart silently cries

Despite the fact that i always knew

You would leave me to live your own life

Where you no longer need me

A feeling of strife

I will never forget that these full grown men

We’re once a flutter in my belly

As I was born again

To become a mom to these two little guys

My love never wavered

Regardless of the fact;

there were tears in my eyes

The tears would come as I realized when

They were no longer my babies

But full grown men
